Community Service

It's not enough to represent people who have been injured. We want to help prevent injuries too.

Drinking and Driving

A leading cause of death for 16 through 21 year olds in the United States is alcohol related traffic accidents. We want to help teens learn to make wise choices about alcohol.

A survey funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reports:
  • 62% of youth report that they have been intoxicated
  • 23% of youth have experienced episodic heavy drinking
  • 26% of youth drank before age 13
  • 40% of youth drink alcohol

Other youth research groups also report these frightening statistics:

  • 1 out of every 5 persons will be involved in an alcohol-related automobile accident
  • A person dies in an alcohol-related collision every 22 minutes
  • More than 50% of the nation's junior and senior high school students drink alcoholic beverages

MADD Georgia
We are pleased to be the corporate sponsor of the MADD Georgia web site.  The mission of MADD Georgia is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.

Scholarship Program

The Shigley Law Firm, LLC has announced a scholarship essay competition open to  seniors in all metro Atlanta high schools who write essays about underage drinking. Five scholarships will be awarded each year to assist deserving students in defraying the costs of higher education. The scholarships will be awarded based on academic merit, a short written essay, community involvement and extracurricular activities. The applicants must be graduating seniors and must have applied for acceptance for full time enrollment at a college or other accredited institution to be eligible.

The essays will be published in a booklet to be distributed through schools, particularly during prom season.

Arrive Alive

Over the next year we will begin distributing to metro Atlanta high schools and community organizations a video about the consequences of drinking and driving. The intent is to spur discussion and help educate youth on why they should "just say no" to drinking and driving, and to riding with drinking drivers.

In addition, to help facilitate parent-child cooperation, the firm will sponsor “Get Out of Jail Free” cards, to memorialize an agreement of a parent to pick up a child anytime, anywhere, without questions, if it means avoiding riding with a drunk driver.

Bike Helmets

Bicyle helments can prevent 88% of all bike-related brain injuries.  Because head injuries are the leading cause of disability and death from bicycling accidents, Ga. Code Ann., § 40-6-296 (e)(1) requires that, "No person under the age of 16 years shall operate or be a passenger on a bicycle on a highway, bicycle path, or sidewalk under the jurisdiction or control of this state or any local political subdivision thereof without wearing a bicycle helmet."

Beginning in October, the Shigley Law Firm, LLC will offer certified helmets at the price of only $5.  Call ahead, then bring your child to our office to be properly fitted.  Then make sure he or she wears it while bicycling, skating or skateboarding.
